Die Schwarze Pumpe wurde am 9.Mai 1993 mit einer wilden Party eingeweiht, obwohl das Bauamt Mitte nach der Endabnahme noch einige Mängel festgestellt hatte. Nur durch Mundpropaganda informiert, kamen viele Leute.
Nach der Beseitigung der Mängel, wurde die Schankgenehmigung zum 11.5.1993 erteilt.
Innerhalb kürzester Zeit, wurde so aus einem im Bau befindlichen Projekt/Lebenstraum, eine gut besuchte Gaststätte; tagsüber ein Café mit Frühstück und Milchkaffee, abends eine gemütliche Kiez-und Studentenkneipe. Ende der 90er Jahre wurde das gesamte Eckgebäude Choriner76/ Fehrbelliner 16 von der süddeutschen Erbengemeinschaft an eine Investorengruppe verkauft, die das Haus 1998 sanieren ließen und es danach in einzelnen Tortenstücken verkauften. Die interessanteste Frage damals war, ob das nun so schick sanierte Haus mit der Kneipe und ihrem Publikum klarkommen würde und umgedreht stand diese Frage auch! Es gelang trotz einiger Irritationen beiderseits. Inzwischen war die Schwarze Pumpe zu einer Institution im Kiez geworden, das Publikum kam nun nicht mehr nur aus dem unmittelbaren Umfeld, sondern aus ganz Berlin und von noch weiter entfernteren Gegenden.

The Schwarze Pumpe was ceremoniously inaugurated with a wild party on 9 May 1993, despite the fact that the building authority responsible for Berlin-Mitte had still found a number of defects following its final inspection. Many people came even though they were only informed by word of mouth.
After remedying the defects, the bar was licensed on 11.05.1993.
Within a very short time, the project / vision under construction turned into a popular restaurant: during the day a café serving breakfast and coffee, in the evenings a cosy neighbourhood and student pub. At the end of the 90s the entire building on the corner of Choriner Strasse and Fehrbelliner Strasse was sold by its joint southern German owners to an investment group which renovated the house in 1998 before selling off the apartments individually. The biggest question at that time was whether the stylishly renovated house would be able to cope with the pub and its clientèle and vice versa! It proved to be a success despite some reservations on both sides. In the meantime, the Schwarze Pumpe grew into a neighbourhood institution, and its clientèle no longer only came from the immediate surroundings, but from all over Berlin and even further afield.
Die Räumlichkeiten
Anstelle der jetzigen Räume gab es früher (?) eine Kellerwohnung mit Ladengeschäft und eine im Hochparterre gelegene gutbürgerliche Wohnung. Beim Ausbau des Cafés und später bei der Grundsanierung des Gebäudes konnten Überreste davon freigelegt werden. Im Keller wohnten also früher sogenannte „kleine Leute“, die eine Seifen-und Kosmetikhandlung betrieben und selber unter den jetzigen WCs eine winzige Wohnung hatten. Über ihnen wohnte eine bürgerliche Familie mit Bad und WCs sowie mehreren Zimmern.
Nach den Auskünften alter Anwohner waren nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg in dem Laden eine Bäckerei und später ein Lebensmittelladen untergebracht. Vor dem Umbau zur Kneipe gab es hier eine Schlosser- und Tischlerwerkstatt des VEB Glas-und Gebäudereinigung Berlin. Im derzeitigen Männer WCs war die Mitarbeiterdusche und das WC, im Damen WC befand sich damals eine kleine Teeküche. Im Gastraum gab es noch einen großen Dauerbrandofen sowie einen extra Raum zum Schweißen. Die Öffnungen über der Bar wurden während des Umbaus gefunden und wieder freigelegt, sie waren die früheren Türen vom Flur der Hochparterrewohnung zu den Zimmern.

Our Premises
In place of the rooms as they appear today, there was originally a basement apartment with a shop below a middle-class apartment situated on the mezzanine floor. Remains of this were uncovered during the conversion to the café and later during the basic renovation of the building. The so-called "little people", who ran a cosmetics and soaps shop, lived in the basement and had a tiny apartment for themselves beneath what are now the toilets. A middle-class family lived above them in an apartment comprising of several rooms as well as a bathroom and toilet.
According to some of the older residents in the building, the shop was a bakery after the Second World War and later a grocery store. Before its conversion to a pub it was also used as a locksmith's and joiner's workshop belonging to the VEB (state owned) Berlin glass and industrial cleaning enterprise. The staff shower and toilet were located in the current men's toilets, with a small tea kitchen where the women's toilets now are. There was a large slow-burning stove in the guest area as well as an extra room for welding. The openings above the bar were rediscovered and uncovered again during the conversion; they were once the doors from the hallway of the mezzanine apartment to the rooms.
Das Personal
Ohne eine insgesamt feste Stammbelegschaft wäre die Pumpe nie das geworden, was sie jetzt ist! Zu den dienstältesten Mitarbeiterinnen zählen Doreen und Bianca, die bereits seit den 90ern die Frühschichten leiten und so zum Erfolg der Pumpe maßgeblich beitragen!

Our Staff
Without a solid core workforce, the Pumpe would never have become what it is today! Two of the most senior staff, Doreen and Bianca, have manned the early shifts since the early 90s and thus made a significant contribution to the Pumpe's success!
Das Programm
Eigentlich wollen wir nur eine gute Kneipe sein: bodenständig und ohne Schnickschnack, bezahlbar, zum essen, trinken, quatschen. Quasi das zweite Wohnzimmer. Gerne könnt ihr hier auch Karten spielen. Es gibt absichtlich kein w-LAN.
Wer will, kann reservieren. Kleine Gruppen ja, die komplette Kneipe: nein.

Our Programme
All we really want to be is a good pub: down-to-earth with no-frills, affordable, a place to eat, drink and chat. A second living room, so to speak. You are also welcome to play cards here. There is no W-LAN on purpose.
Whoever wants to, can book in advance. Small groups, yes, the entire pub: no.

Das Studio
Im Nachbareingang der Pumpe gibt es ab Juli 2009 ein kleines Studio für bis zu 2 Personen. Es befindet sich Hochparterre und war früher die sogenannte Mädchenkammmer des Hauses. Hier lebten die Dienstmädchen der begüterten Familien auf 25 qm und hatten eine Schlafstube sowie eine kleine Küche mit Kochgelegenheit. Heute gibt es natürlich auch eine Dusche, ein separates WC eine moderne Zentralheizung. Zum Studio gehören auch zwei Leihfahhräder. Die Preise beginnen ab 45 Euro pro Nacht für zwei Personen, bei längerem Aufenthalt wird ein Rabatt gewährt.

Our Studio
Since July 2009, through the doorway next to the Pumpe, we have had a small studio apartment big enough for 2 people. It is on the mezzanine floor and was once the housemaids' quarters. Here is where the maids of the wealthy families lived in a 25 square meter apartment with one bedroom and a small kitchen with cooking facilities. Today, there is of course also a shower, a separate toilet and modern central heating. The studio also has two rental bikes. Prices start from 45 € per night for two people; discounts are available for longer stays.
